Australian-based performance artist Stelarc explores and extends the concept of body and its relationship with technology through human-machine interfaces incorporating medical imaging, prosthetics, robotics, VR systems and the Internet. Through his projects and performances, Stelarc examines post-human possibilities that interrogate identity, embodiment and agency, attempting to rethink what a body is, how a body performs and what it means to be human.
In what way is the body an idea and the idea bodily? In what way can probing one extend the other? This and more is what Stelarc talks about in this interview.
